Cyclone Idai- Chimanimani Update
In March of 2019, Cyclone Idai hit parts of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi, leaving behind mass destruction and many, many deaths. The cyclone left these countries in a state of humanitarian crisis, so our Crisis Response Team deployed to Chimanimani, Zimbabwe to bring aid and recover orphaned children.
Whilst there, we identified 10 children who had been orphaned by the disaster and proceeded to put them into our long term care structure, paying for their school fees, providing uniforms, and ensuring their overall well-being.
In October, Wendy and Oni paid the children and their guardians a visit. They reported that the kids are doing so well adjusting to their new situations. Oni said that both he and Wendy really enjoyed chatting with the families and got to learn more about the children. They talked about school with the kids. Several of the children were getting ready for exams while others are studying for certain career paths: two of them aspiring to be nurses. Wendy and Oni gave advice to the kids and inspired them to continue with their studies.
Oni reported that the children are in need of new school uniforms, due to theirs being worn out. We have sent money to them for new school uniforms so they will hopefully be wearing their new uniforms soon.
One of the children has since moved to live with another family member, leaving nine children total in our care: four attending senior school and five at the junior school.
While visiting, Wendy and Oni also got to deliver maize seeds to the families, donated by Lighthouse Church (Memory) and Miracle Missions. The children each received a five kilogram bag of maize seeds.
We are so happy that the children are settled and doing well. Thank you to our Keep a Child family who donate monthly to help make this possible and bring hope to these little ones.
