The Work Experience Experience

Hi, I’m Hannah and this week I joined Operation Orphan on work experience!

Before this week, I knew about the charity as my mum volunteers here, but I didn’t know about how much they do in the local area as well as their work abroad. Until coming here, I didn’t know about Waste Nott Want Nott, or Forget-Me-Notts being connected to Operation Orphan. Since starting, I have had the opportunity to see how both Forget-Me-Notts and Waste Nott Want Nott works.

Showing off some wonderful donated blankets!

On Wednesday, I got to help the Waste Nott Want Nott team with recycling mattresses. In the morning, I also got to see how waste drop-offs work . Before Wednesday I didn’t know anything about the process of recycling mattresses, but now that I have experienced it for myself, I understand more about the process as well as the reasons behind doing it.

I was lucky to be able to join the Forget-Me-Notts team to go out with them on referrals on Thursday. It was really fun being able to build the beds and use all sorts of different tools. It also taught me a lot about the sorts of circumstances families might find themselves in to receive help from Forget-Me-Notts. From this experience, I have become more understanding of why Forget-Me-Notts is such a valuable service to vulnerable families who may need the help they provide.

This week has given me so much more understanding of everything that the charity does, as well as how Waste Nott Want Nott, Forget-Me-Notts and Operation Orphan are all linked together. It has been an amazing experience and as a result I have met even more amazing people. It has opened my eyes to how many different ways Operation Orphan helps people in the UK as well as in countries all over the world.
